LEWISVILLE – Lee College dropped a 81-75 decision to Western Texas on Saturday at Lewisville High School, falling to 0-2 on the season. The Westerners jumped out to a 16-8 lead capped by a three from Miles McDougal and forcing a Lee timeout. A three from Eze Santiago cut the deficit to 16-11, but a jumper in the paint by Ja’Niro Lane topped a 7-2 run to give WTC a 23-13 lead with 10:32 left in the first half. After the lead swelled to 11, consecutive three pointers from Collin Means brought the Rebels within seven. A Sebit Reath three point play would cut the lead to 32-25, but Lane buried a deep triple at the end of the half for a 41-33 lead for the Westerners. The Rebels would stay in range early in the second and an alley oop from J’Von McCormick to Will Sessoms would slice the margin to 48-41 at the 14:20 mark. But another Rebel turnover led to a breakaway basket from Demarcus Hartfield to extend the margin to 11. A pair of threes from Nigel Allen gave the Westerners their largest lead of the half at 60-47 midway through the second half. A McCormick floater would get Lee with 61-50, but Western Texas would soon push their lead to 67-54. Lee put out a fight down the stretch as a midrange jumper form Means and a driving layup by Reath pulled the Rebels within 8 at 71-63 with 2:11 left. Lee would get as close as 5 on a pair of McCormick free throws at the 1:13 mark but WTC would hold on for the win. Lee hurt their cause with 24 turnovers, their second straight game with 20+ turnovers. McCormick led the way for the Rebels with 24 points along with 6 assists and 8 rebounds. Means chipped in with 14 including 4 threes. The Westerner offense was paced by Sergio El Darwich with 16 points and Hartfield adding 15. Lee College will try again for their first win of the season as they will face Howard College at 3 pm Sunday once again at Lewisville High School.
